Not sure about King Kong, but a few years ago I read an article about how the studio that owned It's a Wonderful Life inadvertantly forgot to renew the copyright on it, thereby allowing every TV station in the country to broadcast it freely, without having to pay royalties. It was only then that it became a holiday classic; it had almost become a forgotten film before then, and was not regarded as highly as it is today until it became rediscovered, so to speak.
