You are absolutely spot on! The oil companies know that it can't go on forever and that they need to invest in alternative energy sources but that can wait while they still have profit margins to meet. Investing in these renewable energy sources would mean less money being made, at least in the short term anyway so it keeps on getting put off.

It'll be the poorest in society who'll suffer most when the last oil and gas reserves are damn expensive and the alternatives are still in their earliest stages of development.
