it depends on the kind of music. rock doesn't really have any structured names for anything. on the other hand like classical does. then again I'm a music nerd so, and have taken a lot of classes, like musical theory, the beatles and rock n roll, at ASU.

Yes, as a general rule rock doesn't have a specific structure, but most artists take from other structures, and most of the artists I am really into have a very bluesy rock sound. So I want to learn more about the blues. And I don't give a damn if it has a name, a name is just a label, I want to understand it. I want to hear what Clapton hears when he plays this intense solo. I want to hear what my friend Eric hears when he starts going crazy over the line of music just played. They hear something completely different from what I hear. It's like me looking at a thunderstorm in awe and someone that knows a lot about weather looking in awe, but also understanding how it came to be. And I am taking rock n roll next semester, but thats not going to help, I need music theory.

well you can know how to play an instrument, and just play it. But to play it and be in awe, doesn't mean you have to have music theory. The theory is to play it. The awe is the passion and desire you put into it. Anyone can learn theory and play a guitar. But it's what you put into it that determines the sound, feeling, and power of it. Not theory. But learn that first, to gain the passion, i guess. :)

I have the passion. Music is my passion. I feed off of it everyday, that's not at all the point. I can hear/see/feel and appreciate the artists passion in the music, whether or not I can play it makes no difference. I want to understand the music on a more intellectual level, that's the point.

Since I really don't give a damn to get into an argument that seems so extremely simple to me, I'll just put a new one in to cover my point.

Obviously music has a huge impact on my life and I want to understand more about it. The most logical way of doing that is to learn some music theory. And perhaps the simplist and easiest ways to do so is to pick up a book and do so, which I fully intend to do.

I often use my journal to jot down ideas I get to do with my life, such as wanting to read about and study music theory, so as far as the brutal attack of "then he should go learn, instead of thinking about it." there is no need for that, its just that at 3 in the morning it might be best to leave until tomorrow to do.

Have a Merry Christmas Eve and then an even merrier Christmas.

I didn't at all mean you had NO passion for music. Everyone is getting misinterpreted. As the internet is no place to really have a discussion, because you can't hear emotion or really get what people are saying sometimes. Although all my friends got what I was saying to you, you guys didn't. I was simply stating that there is a passion to learn to play as well. You should pick up the guitar and start practicing. :) You'll love it, you'll be a regular Clapton in no time. If you ever want to jam together let me know :P

And you have a good new year, since I know you don't celebrate Christmas! :)
