OS X Leopard's new "Web Clipping" does some of the work - you just select what part of a webpage you want to view. You can then make that into a widget, for example.
Does not tell you when that box gets updated, but one start.
I use Mail.app's RSS features. I agree - I wish more sites would implement RSS correctly. For personal blogs and so on, though, it is a nice feature.
There's a great little greasemonkey tool that will let you "preview" a page from your reader in-line with google reader... so, for instance, if you have a feed like PA that doesn't display the image, you hit the preview button and it pulls up the linked page in the context of your reader. Keeps you from having to navigate away to the site, which is nice. Ask me at work and I'll give you the name, if you're interested.
Google reader is definitely no replacement for lj's friends page, but it can be a good way to read any LJ communities you're on. For instance, I hate having my friends page clogged up with posts from the puns or steampunk community, so I port those over to reader, then filter them off my general friends page.
I wouldn't give up on reader until you've done some usability tweaking, and explored some of the niftier features (friend's shares, the ability to share ANY web page into your shared feed with comments, etc).
