All my writing professors said to just write the book/story/poem first. Then, set it aside for a bit. Then, reread it and revise,revise,revise. Almost all professional writers have said that they chop off the first chapter of a book once they go back to it. Don't know why, other than you're still telling yourself the story at that point. So the story probably really starts two or three chapters in.

And, Indeed, that is the plan. All first-time novelists are pretty much required to write the whole thing to start, then shop it around to agents, who, in turn, shop it around to publishers
