Fanfic Poser

A fanfic called Out of the Black was posted at Fanfiction.net in November 2006. It contains the following dialoge:

“Peas in a pod we are, come out pea. Serenity swallowed me up now she’s hungry for more. Take you in and make you free." Spoken by River Tam to Riddick.

My little fanfic called Some Kind of Crazy was posted at Fanfiction.net in ( Read more... )

It's possible that either someone is brainsharing with you, or they read yours a long time ago and are subconciously borrowing the lines. I guess it depends on how similar the stories are and if they've made a habit of it. It's up to you completely if you call them out or not. I can certainly see how the similarity would bother you. Either way, I'd probably keep a close eye on the author in the future. ;)

I'm thinking the subconscious borrowing is most likely and I'm sure I'm guilty of that myself on occasion. And I think the fact that the fic in question is completely and utterly godawful bothers me the most. What if someone thinks I 'borrowed' from her? *shudders*

LOL!!

Forgive me, but if they think that, they've got rocks for brains. a) you are BY FAR the better writer. b) you posted long before she did.

I don't think you need to worry about people thinking you stole from her, but I do think you need to keep an eye on her in case she gets brave and starts doing it on purpose. Or at least, more obviously. THAT you don't need. :)

Damn! I wish you had ticky boxes. I voted for #2, but I also suggest #3. Also, I'd suggest going through the story with a fine-toothed comb to see if any other lines sound familiar. She may have lines from other authors in there.

Now, it could be there was brainsharing going on, it could be she subconsciously remembered the line and thought it came from her brain. However, fanfic is such a grey area, it's worth keeping an eye on.

I'm leaning toward the subconscious thing. That wasn't the only line that sounded like she'd either cut 'n pasted or paraphrased my dialogue, but it was mostly contained to the first chapter. I will definitely be keeping an eye on it...unfortunately. It is really the most godawful piece of crap. Tense changes, POV changes, no one's in character at all...*shudders*

I'd say keep an eye on it with the compared sites and dates an' if the author keeps up with the cloning then I'd tell somebody... like say an admin.
I mean maybe it's just something enough like what River would say that you both wrote it, the muse not filing it as used yet *winks* but honestly that sounds like your works being pilfered.

oh and (sorry for the double post) I liked you're version of it quite a bit better, and you know that I wouldn't just say that.

If the woman had any concept of in character or how to write anyone's voices, then yeah, maybe. But the writing's dreadful so I doubt it's a case of great minds thinking alike. At least, I sure hope I'm not in the same category. LOL

well from the bit you posted up there not much and if thats what she has with your influences then I can only imagine and shudder at what you are going to go through to keep an eye on it.

Not so much worrying as feeling uncomfortable. Oh well. :)

I didn't take the poll, but yeah, you're lines were lifted. There is a community on LJ called stop_plagiarism who will investigate it for you. If you can, take screenshots of the offending story and THEN contact the author. Give the author a chance to reply but in the meantime report it to quinara in the comm and someone will investigate it.

I checked the comm and snipets of dialogue that are the same don't count as plagarism. Although there are several places that seem to be variations of my words, they're different enough to be in the hazy grey area of what is and isn't plagarism.

Since the author is only up to Chapter 3, I am going to be keeping up with the fic *sobs because it's oh-so-bad* and if it turns out to be a continuing trend or if she starts grabbing passages wholesale then I'll say something. I grabbed screencaps of the fic just in case.
