Getting a security clearance can take anywhere from 6 months to 3 years. The government changed which agency processes the clearances, and it got all fucked up. My company made a bunch of "contingent hires", that is, they hired people without clearances and told them they would start after their clearances were processed. 8 months after that we found out a lot of the clearance paperwork had been lost, and had to be resubmitted (and IIRC we only found out when we contacted the government trying to find out what was going on).

Actually getting a secret clearance is pretty easy if you were born in the U.S. and don't have an extensive criminal record. They just do a basic background investigation. Getting a top secret clearance is harder, and involves polygraphs.
