I promised someone that I would post this story about a month ago, and I never did. But a promise is a promise, and I want to get this off my chest. So off we go

I totally understand all of this. Minus the Francis-specific details, it sounds like experiences I've had before myself. I haven't had that level of fear in a long time, though-- I did a social phobia study at Duke a few years ago and it really helped me tease out the underlying irrational thoughts that led to the anxiety and replace them with rational ones.
Also, I'm admin on a web forum for discussing Myers-Briggs stuff. I don't remember if we've ever talked about it before. I am also more nervous in situations where there's a likelihood that I will be expected to perform in some way. Family reunions are like that. And especially if I can't really anticipate the exact nature of the performance so I can get myself ready for it. I like to be prepared, like the Boy Scouts. :)
