Gori Vatra rita_ivanovna October 9 2007, 03:06:26 UTC
Speaking of Bosnian films, I was browsing through the foreign films for sale at blockbuster.com and came across one called Gori Vatra (in English, Fuse) that seemed to get enthusiastic reviews. Have you seen it/would you recommend it?

I have seen most of the “readily available” movies from Bosnia/Serbia/Yugoslavia (No Man’s Land, Grbavica, Tito and Me, Underground, Black Cat White Cat, When Father was Away on Business, Do you Remember Dolly Bell?, Loving Glances, We are not Angels, Hey Babu Riba, Seven and a Half, the Hornet), many of those several times now, and getting my hands on one I haven’t seen is becoming increasingly difficult.

This one is a little too expensive for a movie I haven’t seen unless I have reason to believe it’s any good, but if it is, I can almost justify it... Just wanted to see if you had any comments one way or the other about this movie (or other ones to look out for). Fala :) Hope everything is well with you.

Wow, you are getting WAY ahead of me on Bosnian / Croatian / Serbian movies. One film that I would add on your list would definately be "The Perfect Circle (Savrseni Krug) http://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Circle-Savrseni-NON-USA-FORMAT/dp/B000PQSTNO/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/103-8908415-1343031?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1192590792&sr=1-3 But, once again, you see the problem with availability: it is in PAL / Country Code 2!!! I saw this movie in Sarajevo in a MOVIE THEATER! And, I sent the director an E-Mail inquiring about purchasing a VHS copy of the film (those were the days). In response, he mailed me a copy, and let me know that they had a distribution deal with ... I think it was ... Sony Classics, but that deal had fell through. Now, it appears that they have distribution ( ... )

Yes, I'm something of a foreign film fanatic. Normally I’d say don’t get me started but if you're making note of my list then you have to let me qualify it a bit first, because some were much better than others... do you want the long version or the short version? :)

Short version-
Must sees: No Man’s Land; Grbavica; Loving Glances; Black Cat, White Cat; Tito and Me

Recommended: Do You Remember Dolly Bell?; Underground; Seven and a Half; We’re Not Angels; When Father was Away on Business

Less recommended: Hornet; Hey Babu Riba; Before the Rain; Spare Parts.

Long version, part 1 :) rita_ivanovna October 21 2007, 15:14:16 UTC
My first introduction to the wonderful world of Yugoslav cinema was Crna Macka, Beli Macor (Black Cat, White Cat) by Emir Kusturica. My roommate had discovered it from a friend who had brought it from Japan, and she showed it to all of her friends, and then I showed it to all of mine. It’s a fun movie to watch with a big group, and it’s gotten positive reviews from people who never watch anything with subtitles. I’ve seen it three times, but not since I’ve started learning the language so I’d like to see it again. It’s a really quirky story about love and gypsies and the mafia... I think part of it is in Romany, but I couldn’t really tell the difference back then. The music is excellent too. My public library and the (mostly international and independent) movie rental place by my old university had copies in VHS, so it’s not unheard of, but besides one Region 2 subtitled only in Russian I found on Amazon, and a burned copy of it with Spanish subtitles that I found in my professor’s house in Chile, I haven’t seen a DVD anywhere. I’d ( ... )
