Stephen Crane

In the Desert

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter - bitter", he answered,
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

In Winchester
I saw a bride, happy yet sad,
Who, standing in the garden,
With her beau, hand in hand,
Had tears in her eyes.
I said, "Tears of joy, friend?"
"It's my sinuses, the pollen", she whispered,
"But if you tell otherwise,
I'll kick your ass back to Chicago
before you can complete the tale.
Now get back to your seat so we can complete the ceremony!"

I *totally* meant "Westminster" not "Winchester". Doh!

I've always loved that poem. One of my oter favorites?

You fit into me
Like a hook into an eye

A fish hook
An open eye
