One of the best things about the bay area is that the bike commute is totally doable year around. More so depending on when your commute is... As mine is at 5am, it kind of sucks in the winter, in the 30degree and in the rain sort of way. But its doable.
As for clothing... if its just cold, my pair of work pants with a thermal layer under em and and the bottom of the pant legs kept in check. When its cold and wet/raining out come the thermal tights.
I've mostly been car-free in the bay forever. When I did have a car for a brief period I only used it to haul equipment or work out in the country, etc.
This is interesting, I have just started the transition into no more vehicles. I live in a None biking area of Florida, where there is no public transit, and the roads are not made for cyclist. I have managed to be car free for about three weeks now and I love it. I am glad to see that I am not the only one. Some people around where I live think I am crazy, but I am just trying something new, and preparing for a new city that is more bike friendly.
