Touring Climbs and Descents

I'm in the process of planning my travels/bike touring for this year and my route will include Cayoosh pass in British Columbia which has a climb of 1060m in 14km and a grade of up to 15%. This is almost twice as steep and also higher than I've done on previous tours. Has anyone ever done anything like this on a loaded touring bike? Anyone here ( Read more... )

Luckily I've never crashed. This is probably why after a day of being on tour I lose most of all of my fear while riding.

I think my top speed was ~ 41mph/65kmph. I was on tour riding stoker on a fully loaded tandem with a trailer being pulled behind. We were passing cars headed into a town in northern Minnesota.

On that same tour we climbed Mt. Josephine by the boarder between Minnesota and Ontario. It took a half and hour to climb and only a few minutes to get down. Probably nothing compared to what you will be doing, but for someone from Detroit, Michigan it was a definite change of pace.
I don't think we went faster than our 40mph on the way down because my friend riding captain said he could keep the bike straight if we went any faster so he used the brakes to keep us going at a reasonable speed. Going faster would have been fun, but I'm glad to be alive. Also, when you are stoker you need to just trust the captain if you wanna live.
