White vinegar is a fabulous grease cutter. I also use it in the wash as a rinse agent; I put a cupful in the fabric softener dispenser. Of course, I also make my own laundry soap, so it works well with that. And you can make a pretty effective cleaning spray with white vinegar, borax, and hot water, too.

You make your own laundry soap? Cool!

ZOMG, so easy and so cheap per load! Grate a 3 oz bar of the purest soap you can find. I use Kirk's Castile, but Ivory will work. Add 1 cup of borax and 1 cup of washing soda. I do mine in a large Gladware container, so I just shake to combine and then add 2 tablespoons per load. I also add a scoop of OxyClean, but that's just personal preference.

The homemade soap cleans just as well, rinses nicely, and costs $0.05 - $0.10 per load, whereas store-bought laundry detergent is on the order of $0.30 per load.

I got the idea from the care on a tie-dye shirt that's kept it bright for two years. And I confirmed it with these how-to's.

People shrink 501's? I bought a pair awhile ago and they are like spray-on pants on me

Yeah, all denim shrinks when it's washed in hot water and dried in hot air. Pre-shrunk 501's (sewn with gold thread) do it too. I'm just controlling the process with all these hand washings and line dryings so that they don't get too tight all at once.
