RSS is a syndication. Can't remember the exact names of the acronym at the moment. An RSS feed is just an XML file that has a basic summary of information. The information can be read and displayed by an aggregator. There are lots of them about these days, especially if you're using a mac. I can't remember what windows programs read RSS but a quick google search would solve that. The RSS feed for your journal is at http://bikkie.livejournal.com/data/rss but it only contains information for public entries. You can add RSS feeds to your LJ friends page to know when a website has new content. There is a list of feeds [here] that people have already set up. New feeds can be set up via [this page] but you have to be a paid user/earlyadopter to utilise that function.
