When I say I grew up in Florida or that I'm a Floridian, I mean the Florida of Travis McGee. Not "the thing hanging off the front of America" it is today. I left home in 1972 and did not recognize the place I last visited (when we took our children on the obligatory hajj to Disney World in the mid-90s).

For me those novels, particularly the early ones, are both the template for first-person detective fiction, they're time travel vacations.
