Sunday Sermonette: Evil Thoughts

I've come to the conclusion that religion is a sexually transmitted disease. You first catch it from your parents. The percentage of people who stray very far from the religion of their childhood is minuscule. As the Jesuits famously said, "Give me the boy until he is seven, and I will give you the man." you are absolutely right...and it's interesting to me that those that were not born or a strong religious faith, rarely go that direction. Some that I know would admit to feeling some sort of spirituality but it's in the a la mode "Monday is my Yoga Day" way. If they do seek it, it is usually after some major/tragic thing happens to them.

It isn't only sex though that one has enormous guilt with. I spent a huge portion of my life feeling like anything "bad" that I do, I will be punished for. I was in a really bad marriage because I "deserved" it for who knows why...my mother put it in my head, for example, that I didn't show her love so I was a horrible person (meanwhile, it was because she was abusive to me). So, yes, these are psychological things instilled from a parent but it all stems from the Catholic background...

Catholics have it bad, I can attest from experience, but all of Christianity is based on the notion that you are bad, perverse, broken, and depraved. Without New Improved Jesus™ ("He Washes White as Snow!"), you can do nothing good.

And if you seek evidence of this, you need only look at your own dirty mind, sinner.

I'm glad we both survived. You had to travel further than I did to find happiness, but I'm so happy you found it.

thank you so much..it's not to say that those thoughts don't still creep in now and then (hubby and I live with his difficult brother so I tend to think I am being punished for finding happiness) but overall, I have managed to let that go. I also add the Catholic stuff to my art to let it out. ;)
