Sunday Sermonette: Because It Feels Good

Nobody believes in God for only one reason, no matter what they may say. In faith as in physics, you need at least three points in order to have a stable platform. Think of faith as a three-legged stool.

The first leg was learned at our mother’s knee. Most people are brought up to believe and practice the tenets of a particular religion, and seldom ( Read more... )

You know, I have been known to use the words "divine intervention" several times in my life when things happened that I felt were so. Miracles? Maybe. I would like to believe that anyway. They were not known to me in dramatic bolt-of-lightning ways, though. For instance, the strength it took me to fight and not fall into the trap of how my mother wanted us to be - graduate high school, get a job, marry and have kids instead of going to university. The ability to FINALLY leave my ex. The love I found so organically without any efforts in terms of trying to win that love....there are other things as well that I could probably list on one piece of paper. Some would say that I just made choices but these were not easy choices and many not conscious ones. They "happened" when a very strong feeling came over me.

I want to believe these things came to me from a Higher Power. God in the Christian/Catholic sense? Maybe not.

I hear you. There's a beautiful song in Bernstein's Mass called Thank You, about the importance of having someone to thank. And I often still flash on the 8th Psalm, "When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him?"

The trouble with attributing good fortune to a being is that they also have to accept the blame.

“You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe.” (J. Michael Straczynski)

(Sorry to be so late in getting back to you - I could have sworn I answered earlier.)
