So what I did -- and it seemed to work pretty well -- went like this:

"Hi, I'm $(your name)!

You look interesting! Tell me about $(thing mentioned in profile that's interesting)? $(question pertaining to interesting thing)?

Holla, /* people really don't seem to mind if you say "holla" */

-- $(your name)"

Simple and straightforward is good. If they're on an internet dating site, your message-ee presumably doesn't mind being messaged. At least not by you, Bill, who are charming and well-spoken.

Also -- message a lot of people; some will write back, but others are shy. If you don't message them, you don't get to go out for coffee to find out why you don't want to go out for coffee with them again. Or maybe they'll be cool!
