Unfortunately it is extremely noisy, even for a single coil guitar. I'll probably crack it open tomorrow sometime for a look see, then take it in to the shop this weekend. The pickups sound fine, but if they're the source of the noise I'll probably want to replace them with something nice.
Luckily all of these problems - the electronics, the nut - are pretty painless to fix. The guitar still plays great.
And no, I don't generally name my guitars. Although I am a monogamist as a rule.
I'd try to keep the electronics more or less stock if possible, but the plastic nut that isn't fit right has to go. The repair guy/in house luthier (William Brooks) at Atlanta Discount Music is pretty darn reputable IMHO if you decide to have someone professional do all the nut filing and fitting.
