To be perfectly honest, his public persona is everything to him. He is coming from a time, when a man's reputation was a lot of times all a man truly had as money and success could be fleeting. Underneath that persona, we are talking about a man full of pride and just an unwavering ambition to do some good with his life. A big part of him is the fact that he really does want to make the world a better place. Yes, he enjoys being rich and privileged but also a patriot and highly loyal to his country. There is never any doubt in my mind that while he held contracts with the government to supply them with weapons, that he never really made a lot of money during World War 2. Because a lot of the time he was volunteering his services as an engineer and scientist. He got reputation points more than money during that time period. I think that is a big reason why people have thought so well of him
