I was spanked, and I did turn out okay, and I don't feel abused. My girlfriend and I have discussed the issue and we are on the same page about it. We both believe that it is a tool that should be used sparingly but not avoided like the plague. You cannot spank in anger, or it IS abuse. It is a deterrent for use when explaining is inadequate either because they can't really understand your adult explanation of why a certain behavior is unacceptable, or because they have deliberately ignored it.

Well, their argument is that the spanking 'is' true abuse and that there needs to be an intervention.

I was spanked. And it was over the top. I was straight up abused. And I still think spanking is OK if done right (and I turned out ok :p). I like how my friend, Sarah, was disciplined. If the parent who caught them doing something wrong was angry or upset about it, they would send the child to the other parent to be spanked. That way it truely was in discipline and not in anger that the spanking was done.
