So much for the Melbourne cultural mentality of being better than the rest of the country. Melbourne is obviously crap when it comes to caring about conserving water...
Current dam levels (as at 3 January 2009)Melbourne: 32.9

We are pretty pissweak about it looking at that chart, but I'd still be curious to know how the capacity of the dams stacks up against the other cities. Like, if all the dams were full, how many litres per inhabitant would each city have?
the week ending the 29th WAS 40 degrees+ all week... :p
i am swapping my showerhead soon to offset my housemates several long shower a day insanity as my subtle hints are not working at all... though i think i will just have to buy one since i can't figure out my stupid water companies alleged swap thingy
They usually do a swap over the counter...if you just go into their office. Although some water companies have stalls at local shopping centres and you can just take the old one in there and swap it.
You need to get one of these and set it so that she has her own pin number and it will only allow 5 minutes worth of shower each day :p
Rather than a complex stepped scale of obscure deterrents which may or may not be applicable to people for all sorts of reasons a much simpler scale could be used far more effectively and with far less scope for confusion.
Something along the lines this:
Don't do anything stupid: No reprisals. Do something stupid: Beaten to death.
Oh I am quite aware that it correlates with temperature, but other than drinking more water (50L a day??!!) there is really no excuse to be using more just because it is hot.
Factor in longer showers, and more frequent bathroom usage and you could probably make up a handy portion of that 50L, just for the hot days. You gotta remember, people are generally bad at planning or dealing with anything outside the norm.
While working on a job for a Melbourne water company in MR 2 years ago, I was told a story by one respondent about when he owned a farm in Victoria many years ago and decided to build 2 dams on his own farm property to help his own summer water needs on his farm. This was around the 30s-40s I can't exactly remember. As he set about building his own dams on his own property, the local council found out, dobbed him into the State Government, who in turn informed him that it was ILLEGAL for a member of the public to construct their own dams. No prizes for guessing why

Melbourne:
Capacity = 1,773,000ML
Current = 583,053ML
Population = 3,806,092
Therefore potential supply per person is .466ML
Sydney:
Capacity = 2,608,730ML
Current = 1,584,850ML
Population = 4,284,379
Therefore potential supply per person is .609ML
Brisbane:
Capacity = 1,760,050ML
Current = 801,215ML
Population = 1,857,594
Therefore potential supply per person is .947ML

It is a symptom of a selfish society. People are not willing to take responsibility.

Invent some system whereby there are punishments for going over 155 litres per day...
1-5L over = brick through car window
6-10L over = spear through lounge room window
11-20L = saucepan over the head
21-30L = amputation of a finger
and so on :p
