Chapter 3: His Fiancée, Her Back-Up
Mocha Frappuccino and madeleines is what composes Byul’s breakfast today as she sits in a Café waiting for her coffee buddy. The person who knows of her love for Yunho, aside from herself; she never mentioned her oppas name in their conversations though.
Cling. Clang. She looked at the entrance when the chimes made a sound indicating that someone has opened the entrance’s glass door.
“Gomen. I’m a bit late. I had to work until midnight,” Sho said when he was only a few steps away from her.
“Daijoubo. I was the one who called you up afterall,” she smiled at her coffee buddy.
Meet Sakurai Sho, Japanese, international and award-winning journalist. She met in this very same Café where they’re at as of the moment. The place was packed that day since it was cold and rainy that almost everyone just wants to keep themselves warm. He asked if he could share with her table, she agreed, they talked and clicked. They exchanged digits and ever since that day became close friends.
“Yeah. About that, it sounded like you were really in trouble,” he cocked his her to the side.
“He’s back,” she felt Sho focus more on what she is about to say. “…and he’s getting married in a few months time,” she took a deep breath before continuing. “…he asked me to help out with the planning and all, I can’t say no and I’m sure he’d be suspicious if I say no,” she paused.
“And? Go on Byul-i. I know you have more to say,” he encouraged her with that understanding and kind smile of his.
“His fiancée is arriving tomorrow, and I don’t know if I’ll be fine being around them alone,” she clasped her hands together in front of her lips. “Can you be with me? Onegaishimasu~!”
“You want me to act as your pseudo boyfriend? Is that it?” he asked after a while.
“No. Just as my coffee buddy. I just want you to be with me from time to time that I’m with them. Like you have some free time to take break from your work and decided to see me and all. What do you think? I really need you help Sho-chan.”
“If I’m helping you out then you have to do something for me too Byul-chan.”
“Anything. Just help me up. I need a back-up so badly.”
“Then…” he trailed off. “Give me a chance. While I’m helping you, allow me to court you and change your heart,” he declared rendering her speechless, she could feel her mouth opening but no words would come out.
“I’ve been feeling this for a while now. I love you Byul. Daisuki-desu. But all you ever talk about is him and how you’ve loved him almost all your life. I knew I don’t stand a chance even if I try. Now, he’s getting married and I’m sure you’re doing everything you could to forget your feelings for him. You’re also asking for my help, why don’t I just help you through it all? Allow me to take your heart away from him Byul,” he continued.
Hearing his words Byul can’t help but agree with him. Sho has a point and he’s a nice guy too. Who know what could happen? Maybe he’s the man she’s been waiting for; maybe his love would change her heart; maybe his love would make her forget about Jung Yunho.
After taking a very deep breath, she replied. “Sounds fair to me. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. Ganbare Sho-kun!”
…
Tonight, Byul would meet her and she can’t help but feel nervous while she’s sitting in the passenger side of Sho’s convertible. They’re having dinner at a French restaurant. She told Yunho she’s bringing along a date to which he, like an older brother would, protested but after hearing about what kind of person Sho is---Yunho seemed to be appeased and agreed to it.
She felt Sho squeeze her hand. “Daijoubo. I’m with you.”
“Arigatou, Sho-kun,” she was truly grateful to him. “Gosh! We’re here,” Sho who’s maneuvering to park the car chuckled upon hearing her exclaim out of nervousness.
“Byul-chan, get a hold of yourself,” he reminded her.
“Hai!” She gave him a salute which made him laugh out loud, she laughed along.
“Eherm…” the pair stopped laughing when they heared someone clearing his throat. “Byul?” Yunho asked her raising one of his eyebrows.
“Oppa,” she kissed his cheek before motioning to the man standing beside her. “Meet Sakurai Sho-kun. Sho-kun, my oppa, Jung Yunho,” the two men shook hands.
“It’s nice to finally meet you Jung-shii,” Sho spoke first.
“I feel the same way Sakurai-san. Let’s get in. Yejin is already inside.”
Yejin. Byul stiffened hearing the name of Yunho’s fiancée. So that’s her name, she thought hearing her heart break for the nth time ever since this predicament of hers started. Sho seemed to have felt it though, for he caught her hand and gave it a light squeeze.
She turned to him, a grateful smile on her face. He smiled back with that smile of understanding again.
Looking ahead, Byul’s smile faded when she saw Yunho looking at them with a sharp look in his eyes and an emotion she can’t understand. Is oppa mad?
She closed her eyes, and looked at him again. He’s smiling as though he never had that seemingly angry look now. Was I just imagining it? Aish. Byul what would he be mad for? It’s not like he would be jealous or something. Right.
…
They got inside to their reserved table. Sitting there was a pretty woman who to her surprise seem to be older a bit than Yunho. She stood up when they came closer.
“Byul, meet my fiancée Goo Yejin. Hon, my agiya, Shim Byul,” they shook hands and exchanged somewhat awkward smiles. On Byul’s part it was because she didn’t expect Yunho to introduce her as his baby. “And her date, Sakurai Sho.” The other two shook hands as well.
Sho pulled a chair for her before they all sat down and ordered. Over dinner, the main topic was almost entirely about the upcoming wedding. Yejin seemed to be really thankful for the help she has been giving for it that Byul can’t help but like her despite the turmoil inside her, the woman is marrying the love of her life afterall.
Weirdly though, Yunho seems to be thinking about something else. Like his mind is somewhere else. This made Byul wonder but decided to just ask the man the next time they see each other, Yejin doesn’t seem to notice as she talk about the plans she and Yunho has made. As for Sho, he’d pipe in some comments every once in a while, as well as, squeeze her hand under the table for support.
They managed to finish the dinner just fine. Or was it really the case?
