She's bad at writing romantic dialogue too.

Is it difficult to beat the romance of "I said we could get married if I get this job!" Maybe

"I said we could get married if can lance this boil!" or

"I said we could get married if I get a nose job" or

"I said we could get married if I you can stop looking at the word balloons and look at me instead."

Also, 'jokes' about senility are a slap in the face to everyone who has a relative with Alzheimer's.

Given what we know about what she really thinks:

This is the kind of stuff you can’t make up. Some of my best lines came from real day-to-day happenings. We had a large readership among dentists who appreciated seeing their days in the clinic illustrated by someone who knew what went on and was understanding and sympathetic.

we live in a world where we'd get an awful lot of whining about real (jealous and malicious) people with real (easily wounded) feelings were we to ask where she found someone like that.

This is an interestingly worded comment. Now that Lynn Johnston has been divorced from her dentist husband for 17 years, she no longer mentions that the reason she was understanding and sympathetic and knew about day-to-day happenings back in 1995 was because she was married to a dentist. She cleverly words her way around that.

I can think of the only person she knows who she is fooling. She sees this person every morning when she brushes her teeth and looks in a mirror.

Yes, she just happened to know all this stuff about dental clinics from the time she used to work there.
