i grew up on encyclopedia Brittanica, Readers' Digest, Life Magazine, Mad Magazine and local comics. i was 12 and a freshman in high school when i read my first proper fiiction -- Catcher in the Rye.

Mary Renault's Alexander-novels belong to my favourites of the genre, so I hope you'll enjoy them, too. I like that you fell asleep reading The Satanic Verses as well; up to now I thought it was just me, as everyone else kept telling me what a masterpiece it was.
And I agree, both The Name of the Rose and Possession were much more satisfying as books than as films.
