It is kind of funny. I have a professor who is a buddy of mine who told me about how once you are accepted into graduate school, undergraduate education is over. It seems to be very true. It would appear that a great number of pathogenic organisms are able to be pathogenic due to the presence of a pilus. Pili are used for attachment to given regions of the body (e.g. mucus membranes, etc), they are also used in the transferrence of plasmids from one organism to another.
