Discussion Question

I've been thinking... if, at your current job (or a different one, I guess it doesn't matter), you could make $50k a year working 40 hours a week OR you could make $40k a year working 32 hours Mon-Thu, which option would you choose? Benefits wouldn't change but maybe you'd only get 80% of vacation time if you took option B, to keep it fair.

I'd keep the 50, but then I enjoy my job enough that I don't mind being in the office 40 hours. I dunno, 32 hrs/$40k feels more like a Right Here/Right Now job that might be nice, but as we're dragging into the late 20s soon and all I'd be more focused on career advancement and income increase, and obviously you'd have a lot more to invest with the $50k setting yourself up better all-around.

I think I'd have a real hard time taking that big of a pay cut, even if it did mean 3-day weekends.

Well considering those are both more than I make now, the question is null.

But I gotta say, switching o 7-4 has totally made being at work more bearable. Even on Fridays.

That blows. You should just make the enemies. Some days you just need to leave for awhile, even if it's for five minutes to buy a sandwich.

I'd take option B, mainly because I wouldn't mind making that much and three-day weekends are always better. Also, with a four-day work week, you wouldn't need to take as much vacation anyway.

Option B. I'd take Option B in a hot second.

I know, right? I dunno why we work 40 hours a week anyway, I say. I'd be IMMENSELY saner if I had chronic 3-day weekends.

I know many people who are at work for 40 hours a week, but I don't know anyone who actually works all 40 of 'em. :P

I like the 4-days for less routine. I don't know if I'd prefer having Friday off or something like Wednesday off. Just a free day in the middle of the week to blow off steam. True, no three-day weekends then, but there'd at least be the benefit of having 2-on 1-off 2-on 2-off. Harder to get in a routine though.

$40k is way more than enough money in my mind. I'd make the deal even if I ended up only getting $32k for 32/wk. I don't think I'll ever be in the position to make any kind of deal like this though!
