AKA: She comes from a land down under ♫ world where Nations are people, too. Angry, drunk, forever young people. That's the abridged version of it, of course.

History:
The Country | History of Belarus

It's always mildly bizarre to link the actual country's history for these sections, but with Hetalia being (arguably loosely) drawn from actual historical events, it can be assumed that the characters have the same history affecting them that the country does.

Examples of this are Lithuania's relation to her in the earlier days of her life -- she has no certain fondness for him because of this. She’s also obsessed with her brother’s culture - if you know what I’m sayin’. Note: I've worked history into the personality section, which I hope is fine.
Personality:They say that Belarus is the last dictatorship in Europe. In the case of Nations it’s speculated that the Nation does not always agree with their boss but abides anyway out of duty. Natalia is the type of girl where this has to be put into question. You see, she isn’t a playful girl. She’s about as far from playful as you can get. She doesn’t have a vibrant sense of humor, either - rather, she’s no nonsense and will have no guilt in calling out those she sees as less than …mature, smart, what have you. She’s very forward and blunt.

Natalia has earned herself a scary reputation due to her intense personality. The only thing that is muted about her happens to be the softer qualities such as compassion and personal regard for others… She isn’t all bad, despite this. Not really.

Few actually get to see her at her best - guarded emotionally, she often appears impassive to the point of cool. She is a fiercely loyal woman, emphasis on ‘fierce’, to those she trusts whose numbers are few. To those that she does not trust, Belarus is someone to give a wide berth.

Belarus is not stupid. She is fully aware that she has a certain gift when it comes to making others obey, out of fear. This is where that regard for others comes into play. Perhaps it is telling of her as a character that she refuse to change her behavior for the benefit of others. She’s seen in the series as willing to get in other Nations’ personal space just to make her own point - she is not here to make you feel comfortable. In fact, you could call her sadistic in how she takes advantage of a situation.

Let’s take her brother as an example. Russia. He’s naïve but powerful - and incredibly paranoid. There are two instances of him displaying fear in the anime; a bizarre chain letter from Poland (who knows man, who knows?) and Belarus… Unfortunately for him she uses her tenacity for Bad Things, namely sticking to his side. If that means breaking into his house, she’s willing. There is no question that she is aware of his distaste for her obsessive (and unrequited) love for him. No matter the barrier he throws up she is there. Always.

Her motivation to marry her brother is not definitive. Natalia is seen to have a fondness for her brother since childhood, though it wasn’t necessarily a romantic one. We don’t know when she decided that her feelings were love. What we do know is that a good amount of energy is spent trying to convince the poor guy that they should Become One. Her attachment to her brother is one of the reasons why she has canon dislike for Lithuania - when they were younger versions of themselves he took Belarus away from her brother and she was unable to see him for quite some time. Perhaps it was a matter of absence making the heart grow fonder or something along those lines.

Despite her bullheaded determination, she is incredibly dependant. Looking back through her history, the majority of her existence was spent being occupied more than liberated. In fact, it wasn’t until 1991 that she could honestly boast independence - and by that time the damage was done. What seems like a running gag in an anime (re: Natalia’s obsession with Ivan) is a reflection of a shift in Belarusian culture fading to favor Russia’s, even using his language rather than her own.

Her harsh personality and more questionable traits could be blamed partly on a less than spotless history. She had her moments of glory and she had more than a few hardships. During WWII at the Great Patriotic War, a third of Belarus’ population was obliterated. Revolutions had kin fighting one another. Chernobyl? While the plant was located in Ukraine the majority of those that were harmed happened to be Belarusian who still are affected today. Her luck? Not so good.

She is a poor nation, but not in spirit. Without some of those rougher qualities she may have been trampled and stripped of her dignity by now. So yes, she is tough and maybe even abrasive; these qualities are out of necessity. Natalia is a proud, yet slightly unstable woman. Some make excellent damsels in distress. Her? She would sooner stick a knife in you than be called such a thing.

Strong, clever, and capable; she has a lot of fight in her - and that is stated in a positive light.

Understandably, it always goes back to her being one of the harder people you could ever try to approach. She can be highly aggressive - her bark being nice in comparison to her bite - when provoked. Only a few things get her angry to the point where she expresses it - even Lithuania gets the silent, painful treatment most of the times - and it mostly has to do with others not respecting her brother (we don’t see the same for her sister). She is caustic in her words and aloof on her good days. Possessive, manipulative, and calculating - it would seem like there is more bad than good about her.

She survives on the principal that nice does not win favors as it hasn’t done anything for her. She is capable of being businesslike (not quite amiable, but not glaring or otherwise threatening) when it’s benefitting her, surely. Otherwise she is deeply in denial. Natalia wants to be wanted, admired, and paid attention to. Her boss, strictly speaking, more than likely doesn’t on the basis of the tight ship he runs. Her brother fears her but does not respect her and it’d be laughable to ever think he would love her back. Instead of crying (or pouting, or actually VOICING the importance of her intentions in a genuine way) she turns to force. It’s not the best attention, but it’s attention.

Maybe honey gets more flies than vinegar. Natalia holds no interest in flies.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Weaknesses: Her dependency on her brother. She puts a good deal of her devotion and time to ‘wooing’ the poor man and can’t see the sense in trying to expand her horizons, if you will. She’s taken on his customs and language over her own, even.

Abilities: Belarus is scary with a knife and possesses a rather acute aim. Her strength is swift and damaging; deceptive for a girl of her fair stature. She’s also damned hard to kill thanks to her Nationhood.

Inventory: Not much. A few well-worn romance novels balanced out with fables of the more gruesome variety. There’s also a leather-bound journal and a few hair-ties. The journal has a few photographs shoved in the pages. She also has a few of her blades - small for easy concealment.

Appearance:

Ain’t she just a cutie? Looks are incredibly deceiving. Her brother comments that she is very pretty (but not so nice) in the strips, and well, she is. Natalia is a petite woman standing at only 5'3" (157.5cm). It's always the tiny ones that contain the most rage, isn't it? She's also slim, lacking the same plentiful 'bounty' her sister possesses. Her skin is pale - nearly porcelain in quality. Everything about her is pale except for her eyes which are a dark blue.

She is always seen as being very neat. Her hair is immaculately straight, falling down to her back. Attired in dresses mainly, she looks very sweet, very contained. She is fairly modest in what she wears, the majority of her skirts falling at a respectable length. Her owning a sexy black dress is highly unlikely. She is the picture of femininity from the bows in her hair down to the frills detailing her dresses.

Age: 19, appearance wise. In reality she’s been around since the Slavic tribes settled in the area around the 6th century. Growth with the countries is a fairly unexplained process. Comparatively, America appears the same age though he is greatly younger than Belarus, so we could speculate government and other achievements can either help or hinder a Nation's physical aging.

Natalia didn’t look like the kind for stargazing. Truth was, there had been a time in her youth when she had looked toward the heavens and hypothesized that something great was out there, watching over the wretched. It was fanciful, perhaps, but it had been an idle hope for more. Back then there was the earth and sky, and while the ladies of Western Europe probably would have scoffed and called her undignified - some country bumpkin - she camped out (of necessity) with her siblings. She would curl against them and try to count every pinprick of light.

That was centuries ago, when her attempts at gaining approval had been only slightly socially questionable. Her brother hadn’t feared her then. Her sister had mothered as any older sibling would. And while she had felt a slight bit of disconnect with heaven and earth she had nursed hope that one day things would work out. Natalia was tenacious; if she desired an outcome she would figure out a way to make it happen. No matter what.

Now that she was surrounded by more stars than she could ever hope to count she had no interest in partaking in the hobby. She had never had much; few lingering possessions and even fewer sympathetic ears. On Tranquility Natalia found herself lacking what little she’d kept all along; neither sibling to speak of around. The ship was the size of a city and for the first week she had used the communicator to try to reach one of them. She’d annoyed a few though she hadn’t cared and made it blatantly clear, after all she had in that had of hers convinced herself they had to be there.

They weren’t.

She spent a good deal of time in the halls after realizing this, spreading out and away from the central hub of activity. She was determined to find one of the few knowledgeable crewmembers this hellhole possessed.

She had a few important questions to ask..

There are certain people that I am associated with that do not appreciate the seriousness of our situation.
.
Allow me to remind those of  w h a t  we are and why being away from Earth is being of concern. Certain individuals should not be considering this ‘awesome’ or alternately a VACATION.
.
And if you do not stop following me around singing whatever it is. . .
NYET, you cannot be my hero ‘baby’! Is it space that makes you more annoying than usual? Idiot.
.
That is a reminder to you all. I am not in need of a hero. I am in need of someone with a brain that is willing to try to get us all h o m e. I have been systematically █a▗ping the sh░p as we have none to speak of. Unfortunately this ship is so large that it is a task I cannot be doing ▒▒self. This is a s░▒erio░s mat█aa▓░ ␛.
