these are the books i've read so far in 2013. if you're also on Goodreads, you'll notice that there are some books here (labelled nGR) that do not appear in my Goodreads challenge totals. this is for various reasons. sometimes they are re-reads that were counted in my 2012 tally, sometimes they are re-reads that i just didn't feel like including, ( Read more... )

Ah, so ye've read Rainbow and Rilla! Is it too late to discuss after all these months? Shall we wait and maybe brush up later? Or blow it off? I can clear the queue, no pressure.:)

Also, 107? I'm so impressed! I'll be lucky to break 100 this year with all the boring stuff I refuse to finish or give up on.

I was just thinking about our abandoned discussion when I was typing up this list. I would love to continue discussing the Anne books. And I still need to respond to your posts about House of Dreams and Ingleside. How about I try to do that before the end of the year? And maybe we could put Rainbow and Rilla on the slate for the first couple of months in 2014. Only a year late. Sad to say, I've actually had essays that were even more overdue.

I'm pleased about the 107 although I didn't read nearly as many "serious" novels as I was planning. I always get sucked in by the shiny YA fantasy fic. ;)

And amazingly, it replaced the first one. Anyway, that's what that shelf looks like now.:)

I was going to read more serious stuff, too, and ended up going all random and just buying new books to read instead. My big goal is to finish the 6 or 7 that I've been reading all year in the next two months.

Part of the fun of having our own comm is we can come back whenever we want. Meaning next year will be fine. I totally get the attraction of the shiny. :D

Awesome reshoot! My bookshelf icons never work out as well as I think they're going to. I should try again. But, of course, being me, that would mean rearranging all the bookshelves so the colours are purty ...

And you are awesome for waiting for me to catch the hell up. ;)

Mmmm, a new book list. Ive been having the most awful restless feelings lately. I need to get to the library with a list, but I've also been pining for art time. I think that maybe my priority as the holiday season approaches.....alas, reading will have to wait. I've also been satisfying myself with Orange is the New Black on Netflix. I LOVE it.

Trish told me that Orange is the New Black was awesome. I will have to check it out sometime. If I can tear myself away from all these books! LOL.

Art time is THE BEST. Hope you can get some soon. I would like to spend more time doing art myself but lately, I'm all about escaping into the world of books ...

OMG You've been reading so many good books, and so many books that I want to talk about and so many books that I want to read!! What did you think of "Wee Free Men" and "Hat Full of Sky"? I loved them both, but haven't read the other two yet- they weren't out when I read the earlier books so I think I need to do a re-read. Also, "Name of the Wind" and "Wise Man's Fear"! Those are both books that I loved despite their (arguably) extensive flaws. What did you think of "Divergent"? Everyone's been staying its the new Hunger Games. Did you like it? Should I give it a try?

Also, have you heard of the author Rainbow Rowell? I just read two of her books "Eleanor and Park" and "Fangirl" and I am SUPER into her right now.

I thought Wee Free Men and Hat Full of Sky were awesome and I would love it if you read the other two. I really like anything to do with the witches in Discworld and the Nac Mac Feegles just slay me. What could be better than tiny blue-skinned foul-mouthed Scotsmen?

I also loved The Name of the Wind - which I've wanted to read forever - and The Wise Man's Fear, despite their flaws. I read The Name of the Wind in pretty much a single day at my parents' cottage. I was so engrossed. I'm just sorry that now I have to wait for book 3 to come out. :(

And, yes, do give the Divergent series a try. The books are real page turners. There is lots of violence, though, so be warned. And they aren't perfect. I picked up on a few lapses in logic but the story is so face-paced and she's created such an interesting society that I was willing to overlook them.

It's funny that you mentioned Rainbow Rowell. The cover of Eleanor and Park totally caught my eye at the library and then I saw that one of my friends at Goodreads was reading Fangirl. I'm ( ... )

Absolutely nothing is better than wee foul mouthed Scotsmen. I am so going to have to re-read those books and finish the series. I was just recommending those books another friend- maybe I can get her to read them with me ( ... )

I freaking love talking books with you too! :D

Sadly, the Rainbow Rowell books were checked out when I made it to the library. I'll have to implement some holds. I haven't read any John Green, but The Fault in Our Stars is on my TBR list. It's just always checked out at the library.

I think Divergent could be a good book to listen to on CD. It's not so complicated that it would be difficult to follow. And it's first person narration so provided the reader is someone who is believable as the main character, it could work very well.

I didn't like The Wise Man's Fear as much either and didn't barrel through it quite as quickly. I wasn't sure why, either, but I think your comment that it felt less consistent is spot on. I'm also starting to worry that the entire thing is going to be about what happened in the past and not move forward from the inn. I want Kvothe to get his powers back!!

The Introvert Advantage is having more time to read :) oddmonster November 10 2013, 19:26:51 UTC
WOW. This list is amazing!

How did you like Smoke and Bone? And did you like Kingdoms of Dust? I didn't see a rating on GR (not that I'm totally stalkery on GR and pay close attention to your reading updates except that I do :)

You look like you had an AWESOME October! Excellent!

More time to read is definitely the Introvert Advantage. ;)

I liked Smoke and Bone quite a lot. Very original and it gave me a burning desire to visit Prague. I got a little bogged down in the sequel, Days of Blood and Starlight, which I tried to read before I re-read Smoke and Bone. I'm hoping it was just where my head was at the time and that my second try will be more successful.

I did like Kingdoms of Dust but haven't rated it on GR yet because I'm still trying to decide where it falls on my scale. I don't want to say too much because I don't want to influence you but I am eager to know what you think of it when you get to it.

If the update-monitoring is mutual, is it GR stalkery? Do we cancel each other out? Or does the stalkery factor instead increase exponentially? These are the things I ponder ...

I have Smoke and Bone on my shelves at home, so if you want to re-read it as I read it (or some't thereabouts) just holler. I'm so much a fan of this social reading thing.

Weirdly, it's something Day Job does research on. For instance, we're currently running a project where 5 different classes at 5 different middle schools across the state all read the same book at the same time. Then they get on Google hangout and squeal at each other (in a guided, educational way). They also go on Edmodo and talk about the book in forums, or answer questions about it. Honestly, it's a lot like OLC if OLC was populated by 200 5th graders.

So maybe not a lot like OLC, now that I think of it.

But they do get to give each other badges...

Social reading, woot! It would be way cool to re-read Smoke and Bone while you read it.

So maybe not a lot like OLC, now that I think of it. No, maybe not. Although I wouldn't be adverse to badges ...
