There's no need to be "fair and understanding" anyway. The way I see it, you should treat someone only as well as they treat you. (you in a general sense... not you specifically)

I went through a very similar experience with Ally. Some people are afraid to talk about these things, especially with people they don't know well, but I know that afterward, when I talked about it with people, who had had similar experiences, it helped me learn, get a better perspective and figure out what to do in the future.
