Every doctor is different, but I believe I've had brands switched just by making a phone call and stating my issues with the current one. You can always call and find out. It sounds like the hormone level might be too low for you, and that's why you have the breakthrough bleeding. As you stay on birth control, it will lighten your periods. Your lighter period could be due to that and/or the spotting.
