On Being Queer

May 22, 2012 13:48

In the spirit of the leave your privileges at the door post last week, here's a wonderful illustrated explanation of being queer. I grabbed it from Erica Moen's Twitter account, and she's really enjoyed the feedback so far, so I encourage you to go let her know if you liked it.

Note: It is a little Not Safe For Work, so watch where you open it!

Whilst I love certain aspects of this (especially the way people's perception of your sexuality tends to change depending on who you're with), I'm extremely uncomfortable with the implication that being a lesbian upholds the gender binary (she may not have intended that, but that's what I got from that panel.) I'm also uncomfortable with the epitome of queerness in her eyes being the ability to share in the objectifying of women with her male partner.

Then again, I do have a grudge against Moen after some of the gross transphobic stuff she has come out with in the past (amongst other gross stuff) and I've heard that she has made some racist comments too.
