Why is it that we constantly view relationships as some sort of battle or game?

Several reasons. Security. Assurance. Mutuality. Trust. Agreement. Among the first few... and let's not forget - Emotion - and lots of it.

Is it becacuse that deep down we know there will be a point in which we will need to instantly turn around and defend our selfs, protect our feelings and emtional well being?

Yes, to maintain our own credibility. Without that, nothing is believable - not even ourselves.

I can completely relate to what you are saying! Ha, its funny reading it from someone else's perspective; odd how similar it is. Anyhow, I say that now that you have said it, don't shrink away and become distant. Stand by your conviction. If she doesn't return the sentiment, it will suck, but at least you were strong enough to say it. That takes true courage.
