Military Draft

Oct 15, 2004 21:25

So I haven’t updated in a loooong while. Bite me. But I guess I was just waiting for something to happen. And lo and behold, it does.
Here goes.

Many of you guys know that I’m a US citizen, as well as a french citizen. It’s one of those things that I enjoy, without really realizing what it means. I take advantage of the dual citizenships, it’s easier to get into the US with my American passport, but my French passport is handy for traveling from France to other European nations. The US passport gets me through customs without a second look, and my French ID card gets me out of trouble here, cuz I can pretend it’s a temporary visa thingey (which it is, so its not that much of a lie).

And so life continues. Until today, when I recieved a letter from the French Consul (diplomat), informing me that I had just turned 16. Really? Wow! Thanks guys. So I read on, and find out that before I turn 18, I need to enroll in the military services. That’s right. From 18 to 25, should there be a military draft, I would be drafted. It’s kind of a shock. I know that Israel has a draft for both men and women, but I never realized France did too. It’s one of those things I’d never thought about until now. It’s kind of scary for me, cuz I just realized that I have to choose my nationality before I turn 18. Choose American, and I’m stuck here. Choose France and if something happens, I’m screwed. Yeah, you can say theres no draft now, but look how close the US is to having a draft, and you never know when something like that could happen.

I guess the best thing to do is what I had always planned to do. Choose my French nationality and apply for a student visa to study here. I’ll turn 18 right after senior year, so it’ll be perfect. I’m just kind of scared now I guess. And confused. *sigh*

Time to go to bed, competition tomorrow morning.

luv
Sabrina
