Unfortunately the only altitude remedy I've used is coca leaves, which work great but are illegal here. I think any kind of chewing gum or ginger candy might help a bit with the stomach fluttery effects, and remembering to take deep slow breaths should help with the shortness of breath that can easily be misread by the body as panic or anxiety.
should I wait until I get there, or really hydrate before? because I was hoping to take some water pills to help with the my feet swelling on the plane.
Don't know about altitude sickness stuff, except that I've been told that for the first few days, you should limit your use of alcohol at high altitudes, or suffer a hella-hangover. Not a big issue for you, I know!
For the trip itself: My only "trick" for flying is to bring earplugs - I find that wearing earplugs makes the 'popping' much less, plus you don't hear loud obnoxious people as much as you would. Also, if you get stuck over the wing, you'll be glad you have them...
Oh, a little drink won't hurt you, just be moderate for a day or so while you get accustomed to the altitude change. At least, that's what Lana told me, and she goes to Telluride every summer...
I drank about 4 beers my first night in Quito (going from weeks at sea level to 2500 meters) and I was fine, but I woke up about 4 a.m. feeling wide awake and as jazzed as if I'd had four cups of coffee instead.
