the flaming lips

So last night Jason had a chili cook-off. He made the mistake of saying he'd give out prizes for the best chili, most unique, hottest, etc. I make a pretty good chili, but I wasn't sure I could pull off "Best Chili", so I decided I'd take home the prize for hottest instead, because you can't just go to this sort of thing. You have to throw down. ( Read more... )

Incidentally, I'd rather eat said chili than listen to a Flaming Lips album in its entirety.

How close was it to Dad's atomic chili? I think I was maybe 6. We all cried.

It was hotter than Dad's atomic chili, which, for those outside the family, was made with leftover hot sauce packets from taco joints all over Lombard, IL. I was under eight. Mom was out of town. My dad's a sadist.

But it wasn't hotter than the hottest wings I've ever eaten.

Also, "Yoshimi" is a sweet album. You are a twit.

Eh, I D/Led Soft Bulletin and it was atrocious. Unless that guy has learned how to sing well since that album, I'm not interested. He sounds like a terrible cross between a Jerry Lewis and Mike the cat with his head in a vise.

His voice is part of the package; after a while, you'll come to like it. Compare it to Neil Young instead of Mike the Cat and it'll go down easier.

Yoshimi came later (2002 vs. 1999 for The Soft Bulletin), and, while his singing is a lot better, it's still Wayne Coyne and that's just how it is. You probably got through the first track on The Soft Bulletin and got put off by his voice and didn't hear the rest of it. Get through "The Gash" and "Waitin' For A Superman (Remix)" before you give up on the album.

As for Yoshimi, give it a shot. It's considered the most "accessible" Lips album, and I think it's their best.

Classic story, one to add to the family history books after Uncle Dick Cannons Squirrels. Bear-meat chili might be lovely next time. If you ever get invited back.

Soft Bulletin isn't as good as Yoshimi, which even Audrey digs, Henry, so give it a shot. Nick, have you heard Arcade Fire? I think you might like it. But what do I know about what you whippersnappers are listening to these days?
