Why is Emmett So Beloved

Jan 18, 2008 18:06

The extremely smart and perceptive gmta_nz asked me a question in my personal journal post about Emmett.
Fire, is there anyone, any fan who doesn't love Emmett? If you think about it, ALL the other QAF characters have someone who hates, dislikes, feels conflicted about or is at least indifferent to them. But I never heard of anyone not adoring Emmett. Why ( Read more... )

I think Emmett is the type of person many people (myself included) would love to have as a friend. He is almost loyalty personified. I don't mean someone who tells you "ok, yes do what you are doing", but someone who genuinely cares about you and gives you honest the opinions. Even when he criticizes, challenges, and walks away it is clear that he does so out of love.

I think Emmett's portrayal as the ultimate friend cannot be ignored. I think someone posted in the Bitches Em Love Picspam that he is the friend everyone wants to have. That he is there for his friends, honestly and thoroughly. What you say about his caring and honestly cannot be denied. When he gets in his friend's face it is done out of complete respect and love. He rocks.

I saw the lack of interest in Brian differently. For me not being intimidated by Brian appealed to me not because I want Brian or wondered if he was good enough for Brian, but because it shows true strength and confidence not stand up to the "Stud of Liberty ave". I completely agree. I love ( ... )

I once wrote a page of 20 reasons why I love Emmett but sadly don't have them with me and even if I did, it'd take me hours to find it. So here are my main reasons ( ... )

Thank you for responding, I enjoyed reading your answers.

1. His bravery: He had to survive people taunting him, teasing him, the ridicule of family and friends and yet he still was always himself. I greatly admire that for personal reasons and for surviving through it with his personality intact. What I have alwasy appreciated about Emmett is that we know he went through hell in Hazlehurst, MS, but clearly he never allowed those demons to define him. He never excuses or rationalizes his behavior. Nor have his demons jeopardized his inate sense of right and wrong.

2. His love: He's not afraid to love and be romantic and allow himself to be swept away in it. Even if he gets hurt, he keeps doing it. And at the same time, he unconditionally loves his friends and gives them so much support and honesty in trying to help them.
I love Em's romantic sense. I admire it. I envy it. He accepts that love will sometimes hurt. His unconditional love for his friends is a part of his strength.

3. His fabulously gay self: I love that he's ( ... )

Because Emmett, as perfrectly played by Peter Paige, was a well rounded multi-dimensional character. Emmett had such great highs and some desparate lows. Peter expressed them all in his fine portrayal.

He was warm and loving, brave and bold, gentle and kind. He loved life. And as the seasons passed, Peter's beauty grew. I didn't think he was gorgeous in the first episodes, but over the seasons I couldn't believe how Peter physically evolved.

Myself and other girls I've talked to have agree Emmett is the friend we want.

I think Peter is a very talented and emotive actor with a wide range of capabilities.

For me, Em was always attractive, but with maturity I found him even more facinating.

Yes, Em is the ultimate friend.

Why I love Emmett so random_glitch January 19 2008, 17:16:01 UTC
1. I wish he were my friend.
2. He doesn't take any of Brian's shit. He isn't in love with Brian, as are Justin, Michael, and half of gay Pittsburgh, and he doesn't want to be him like Ted. He's really the only one of the group who kind of laughs Brian off. And I love that. It's like he's too secure with himself to let the force that is Brian shake up his world or make him less confidant, and that makes me happy.
3. Look at him. No, really, look. I'll wait. Enough said.

As for the Brian/Em thing...there may be a point to that.

You have hit on a very perceptive point. He does not want Brian, nor does he want to be Brian, which makes him very unique in the QAF world. He is his own man. He stands up to Brian in a way that none of the others do. He does not take any of Brian's crap and completely holds his own with him.

As I've mentioned over at jans_intention I'm not sure if Em tricked as much as Brian but he did trick a lot too.

As for desexualizing Emmett, I can't speak for everybody but I don't think I do. QaF has had a lot of really in your face sex scenes. Most of them involved Brian and Justin together but others of that caliber are solely Ems. His scenes with Drew Boyd in the motel room is forever seared in my brain. It was raunchy, not only because of their positioning in the scene. The whole essence of that relationship screams Sex Scandal.

I never thought that Emmett was not a sexual being. But for me he was a sexual being like my BFF. I hear all the juicy details, we laugh, cry whatever, but it is not a sexuality that is aimed towards me.

Yes, the sex scenes with Em and Drew were screamy sordid detials, stay tuned, full report at 11.
