When the thought of going back to work induces a panic attack so severe it can only be quelled by medication, I'd say it's time to quit that job, n'est ce pas?

Only you know whether this is something you can get past. If you can't, don't consider it quitting, consider it a change in direction or an extended break. You can always return to it at a later date if you want to.
You've been in this business for many years now. The volume of bodily fluids you've had to deal with alone would probably fill one of the Great Lakes, if not one of the oceans. Everyone reaches a level of burnout at some point, and it's better to go before you ignite fully.
