last thursday I filed for my tax returns; I still get a reasonable sum back every year, so I like to get it in my hands ASAP. I spend a few dollars on hrblock.com and it takes me all of 20 minutes of my time, since they import all of the prior year's info for you, and you just make any changes (of which there are few), and viola! money in hand in ( Read more... )

Doing my taxes myself makes my head explode, and they are pretty simple. Jack does them for me and has since we moved in together. Just looking at a tax form makes me feel like I want to cry, whether paper or electronic.

I always owe money. My goal is just to not owe too much. I don't like getting a refund because that means I've been overpaying all year.

I (and many people!) deliberately overpay, claiming less exemptions than I have, so that a) I'm certain not to possibly come close to owing any money and b) I have a sort of built-in savings plan, at the end of each year adding up to several thousand dollars for large purchases. I don't have credit cards and am SHIT at saving, so this works out really well for me.

I know SHIT about doing taxes, being British. We don't have to do tax returns, our place of employment does that for us automatically and we are refunded automatically if necessary. We never OWE anything. Since I've been in the US I have no clue what the hell you do. el Codo does them for me and I just sign on the line. It's a foreign language to me. Just like health insurance. I didn't even know what a copay was when I arrived here. :)

Every year I have already spent my tax return before most people even begin to think about working on thiers.

This year is going to be great. While I normally have a nice little sum, somewhere around $500 from federal (I usually break even on state) I plan to see a much larger return this time. When Bayer (as in asprin) bought out the division of the company I was woking for I got paid out for all of my unused paid time off, which was about 300 hours. Then I got paid out for all of my stocks. Uncle Sam took a huge bite from both of those, and I expect to see a whopper of a return.

I file the day my info arrives in the mail. I file electronically and I do direct deposit. I'm usually spening my return by the first week of Feb.

I'm exactly the same - already spent, more or less, and electronic file with direct deposit. ZING!

Taxes make me cry. It's such a pain in the ass gathering everything I need. And I never have enough paid in, I always owe. In this regard, being self-employed sucks donkey dong, big time. :(

(And this year it's even worse, because this stupid Vista-infected computer won't read/print the fucking files I need, so I have two computers up and running just trying to gather the shit I need. GRRRRRRRRRRR!)
