My sister tried to get me one year by posting on LJ that she was pregnant. I wasn't fooled for a minute. She tried to play it off like "I'm checking the stick now ... it's PINK ... OMG !!!" and I was like, what? are you peeing on the stick with one hand and typing with the other?

Here's a tip: if you want to convey shock and surprise, don't bother with formatting strike-throughs and text cuts. Lacks verisimiliude.

indeed. everyone else who commented was like OMG CONGRATULATIONS!!! and I was forced to conclude her friends-list was comprised of morons who didn't know the first thing about narrative plausibility.

either that, or they were all drama queens who didn't think there was anything suspect about typing the word *faints,* rather than actually, y'know, not typing it because you were in fact too busy fainting.

One of my coworkers went through the whole office last night and switched the names on the outside of all of the cubicles. I spent most of the morning as "Kelli".

We had one woman who was actually worried for a second that she'd been fired, but otherwise, it's gone over pretty well. A mild effort, but cute and not mean!

yeah, that was harmless and might have gotten a few confused chuckles. the only office prank I ever did was to unplug things from the back, and that was to intentionally annoy my crazy coworker, who was hopeless and would spend FOREVER trying to figure out why something wasn't working. she never caught on!

My favorite office prank, which I've never actually done alas, is the Screenprint Wallpaper trick: while a coworker is away from their desk for a moment, take a screenprint of their current monitor and set it as their wallpaper. Then hide their shortcuts and anything else on their desktop in a small folder. They will have no idea why their computer is suddenly "broken", and you can fix it really fast once the joke wears off or they get upset.
