That's a really, really good idea. You should write someone. :)

I think it's a cool idea, although it would be a pain to implement and that's probably why no stores do it. Groceries complained about bottle deposits, though, and they happened, and now there is less glass and crap on the streets (not to mention, less recyclable material in landfills), so if a store is motivated, it might work.

Of course, now I have the Bobs song "Food to Rent" in my head.

In Michigan, I grew up equating an empty soda bottle with a dime. Many a clandestine candy-supply mission was funded by collecting and returning bottles and cans. Those add up quickly when 10 cans make a dollar.

There wasn't a single time in my entire Michigan-based life where I threw away a bottle or can that was eligible for a refund. If it was destroyed, I'd still try to return it if the bar code was legible.

Out here? Notsomuch. The only time I've returned bottles or cans was when I was unemployed or when 'inheriting' a huge bag after a school district meeting.

Something about 5 cents just doesn't have the same cachet as 10.

The Gap/Old Navy/Banana Republic might actually consider it, too. They're all the same company, and they're based in San Francisco, which is all about social responsibility...

Hmmm...Here's the contact info for Gap Corporate; might be a good way to get the ball rolling...

I think I will send them a note suggesting it. What's the worst that could happen - they don't do it? Well, they're not doing it now, so... *shrug*

Thanks for the contact info. (:

Sure...
At the very least, they might send you a coupon. Talk about win-win!
