2016 Pacificon Schedule! \o/

Feb 19, 2016 22:08

Hello all! \o/ We are just 6 short weeks away from this Bitchin' Party! (Not that I'm counting down or anything)

We are all ready to go with the con programming schedule. There are so many great panels happening this year, I know we have some difficult decisions to make!

You can see the schedule a bit clearer on Google Docs here.

*quick note*
If you are a mod on multiple panels, I split them up as much as possible - mostly on different days. In a few cases, though, people do have panels close to each other. Please contact me if this is a problem for you.

Full panel list:

Saturday -- Room A

10:00: The Truth About Fandom
Fandom is all about making stuff up. Or is it? From allegorical truths about the world to critical truths about canon to personal truths about desire, there's a lot about fannish creation that isn't fictional at all.
(Moderator: jedusaur)

11:00: Fun With Inverted Tropes
We all know the classics: accidental baby acquisition, huddling for warmth, woke up married, undercover in a gay bar, amnesia. What happens when you turn it inside out and upside down? From "woke up straight" to "the aliens made them AVOID doing it," what are your favorite inverted or subverted tropes? We'll talk about our favorite trope inversion fanworks and what tropes we'd like to see switched around next.
(Moderator: corbae)

2:00: Pining for the Fjords: Fandom and UST
Unresolved sexual tension is everywhere, in fanon and canon, from Sherlock and John (or Holmes and Watson) to Mulder and Scully. In many ways fandom exists to resolve that tension. Why are we so affected by longing? Let's discuss!
(Moderators: kormantic, runpunkrun)

3:00: Star Wars - STAR WARS: THE FANS AWAKEN
Feeeeelings. Nothing more than feeeeeeeelings. No? You want more than that? Let's talk about what made The Force Awakens so great. Are we just riding the nostalgia train or is there something fresh and new that has us hooked? (With side tangents for NO, BUT HOW ARE THEY REAL? and potential theories for why Kylo Ren never seems to have helmet hair. The Force: caring about hairdressing since Before Yavin?) And probably some other stuff that we will wave our hands and Jedi mind trick everyone into thinking about.
(Moderators: catwalksalone, brynnmck)

Saturday -- Room B

10:00: Hamilton - Hamilton: This Fandom is Non-Stop
What does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore, and a Scotsman have to do with fandom? Thanks to Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway musical, Hamilton, lots! Come talk to fellow (and perhaps future?) Hamilfans about the songs, the characters, the history, and our favorite moments.
(Moderators: sdwolfpup, belmanior)

11:00: Porn? Yes please!
Have you ever left feedback along the lines of, 'I'll be in my bunk?' Do you write the sort of fic that provokes that response? Would you like to? Do you wish there was more hot porn in your fandom? Then this panel's for you!

Let's talk about what makes NC-17 scenes really work for us, and how to make them even hotter.
(Moderator: keerawa)

2:00: MCU - Ladies of the Marvel Universe
Let's talk about the women who make the MCU what it is and why we love them!
(Moderator: desertport )

3:00: Writing tools to save your soul (or sanity)
Scrivener, Written Kitten, Google Docs... how to get the most out of what you write with.
(Moderators: Minim Calibre, gwyn_r)

Sunday -- Room A

10:00: Almost Like Being in Love: Pretend dating
Into each fandom, and awesome fake dating fanwork must fall (or will, if there is any justice). But why is the trope so endearing and popular? Does it relate to marriage of convenience, or is that a different trope? Are there times when it doesn't work?

Most importantly, what are your favourite fake dating fanworks? Bring your recs!
(Moderators: Penny, melusina)

11:00: Through a Glass, Queerly
Fandom and fanfiction transform mainstream media in ways that provoke intense discourse around sex, gender, and sexuality. We've gone beyond the classic queering of platonic bromances into genderswap, genderfuck, asexuality, and omegaverse lamp-shading, subverting, and exploding gender roles. Is this the new frontier of feminist and gender studies? Bring your recs for stories that have made you think about these issues, and let's talk!
(Moderator: keerawa)

2:00: Fannish Osmosis Fic Exchange
Write a stranger the fic of their dreams...for a canon you only know about via hearsay!

Other types of fanworks welcome, as long as they can be completed in about fifteen minutes; reading/sharing with the room is encouraged for maximum hilarity, but not mandatory.
(Moderator: Scribe)

3:00: Fan is A Tool-Using Animal
Fandom as we know it wouldn't exist without the tools we use to create and consume. From hardware to software to web apps, fandom has co-evolved with technology and infrastructure in some really fascinating (and unexpected!) ways. So let's talk about fannish tool use: our past, our present, and where we might be headed in the future!

(Title borrowed from Pinboard Guy's excellent conference talk of the same name. Thanks, Pinboard Guy!)
(Moderator: KTC)

Sunday -- Room B

10:00: Genesis of a Fandom
While fandoms are many and varied, there are traits that tend to be shared by the most popularly transformed canons and ships. We'll talk about the characteristics of fandom juggernauts, try to figure out some of the reasons for their appeal, and in the process collectively invent a canon that would totally take the internet by storm if it were real.
(Moderators: jedusaur, prophetic)

11:00: Music - Can music save your mortal soul: Music Fandom
A panel for people who are fans of music in general. The people who build soundtracks to their lives, who try to go to concerts or other live music events when they can, who love to share and receive song recommendations in all types of genres. Let's talk about being a music fan in the digital age: do you watch music videos? Where do you get your new music finds? What are your thoughts on the rise of kickstarter/PledgeMusic/etc. for new albums? Do you like being able to connect directly to the artists or do you prefer your music separate? Bring your all-time favorite song recommendations, in any genre, and we'll do a swap!
(Moderators: SDWolfpup, mizface)

2:00: Being a Better Beta
Everyone loves a beta reader, but how do you become the best beta you can be? Come discuss tips and tricks of the beta trade!
(Moderators: Minim Calibre & gwyn)

3:00: Jessica Jones - Kicking Ass and Taking Shots: Jessica Jones
Jessica Jones broke through several firsts for MCU: first canonical queer characters, first female main protagonist, and a story line that dealt with sexual assault and abuse in a really powerful way.

So come join us as we talk about all these things PLUS the awesomeness that is seeing intense female friendships onscreen AND ,equally as important, Luke Cage's pecs.
