Prelude

A girl concealed by heavy, black shadows followed a lone figure as he stumbled carelessly down a deserted alley.  She glanced up into the night sky at the bright, full moon and closed her eyes briefly, swallowing down her apprehension before continuing her hasty pursuit.  A quick glance over her shoulder revealed that no one was following her. Perfect.  The street was completely empty, the shop windows were black in the darkness and doors bolted shut.  Not a sound could be heard except from the person she was trailing.

Exhaling a shuddering breath, she increased her pace to catch up with other figure, careful to remain silent.

A lanky youth staggered heavily a few metres in front of her- probably drunk, she thought, watching as the boy tripped over a raised slab of concrete.

The girl launched herself at him, landing on the unidentified boys back. She propelled him forward, making sure to keep him unbalanced and disoriented. She roughly dragged him by his collar over to the wooden fence, forcing him to brace against it as she pressed herself into him, pinning him there.

The mysterious girl sank her sharp fangs deeply into his smooth pale neck; she drew out his warm blood, savouring the unique taste on her tongue.  She ignored his pathetic pleas and didn't stop until he slumped in her arms. She let him fall limp to the fall; dead.

The girl cleared away any evidence of blood from her mouth, and quickly made her way out of the alley.

She whispered hateful and hurtful things to herself, not letting her mind forget about the unforgivable sin that she just committed, and on many other occasions. She angrily wiped at her face; removing away the tears that were spilling from her eyes.

As the girl walked away from the dark, silent alleyway, which now only held death, she heard the unmistakeable sound of gravel crunching under foot.  The girl slowly turned, thoroughly scanning the street and the alleyway.  She narrowed her eyes and stealthily crept along the street, glancing all around her.   A flash of light caught her eye and she quickly bent down and picked up a gold ring, examining it quickly, running her finger tips over it and wiping away dirt.

There was a flurry of foot steps and hands clasped down on her shoulder, making her jump and drop the ring. She quickly turned, her hand reaching out to grab a hold of whoever was touching her but froze when she realized it was her friend.

"Justina, what are you doing here?" She whispered harshly. She suddenly looked at her friend suspiciously, still whispering hurriedly. "Were you following me?"

"Tracy, you’re paranoid." Justina flipped her hair over her shoulder, brushing it out of her eyes. "Listen, I'm bored.  There’s a party at the beach, supposed to have a band and many, many helpless humans milling around.  We should go.  Now.”

The girl -- Tracy, ran her fingers through her hair distractedly and remembered the ring she had dropped.  She quickly scanned the ground but it wasn’t there.  Tracy shook her head and looked blankly at Justina, frowning at her when a thought occurred to her.

"You didn’t answer my question."

"What question?" Justina replied, feigning innocence as she looked down the street, practically dancing in anticipation.

"Never mind, you wouldn’t tell me the truth anyway." Tracy sighed; she looked up and down the street, it was still dark and empty.

Justina smirked at her, and then stuck out her lower lip; pouting like an insolent five year old.

"I'm hungry.  I need meat.  I haven't had anything all night; you got a nice tasty drunk guy to drain.  Now I want one.  Or two.  Are you going to come to this beach party with me or are you going to make me go by myself?" Justina demanded, finally losing all pretence of patience. "Oh don't worry.  I'll go by myself."

With that she stalked off down the street in the direction of the beach, her shoes clunking on the tar road.  Tracy hurriedly jogged up to her, calling for Justina to slow down.

"Hang on, I will come with you but you can get someone to eat by yourself. I can't stop thinking about that guys parents," she whispered, her voice cracking slightly. "Like when they find out their son is dead!" Tracy shuddered, wrapping her arms around herself. "They'll be heart broken and it will be all my fault. Again."

Justina snickered, sneering at her. "Wow a vampire with a conscience!'' Justina rolled her eyes. "Listen, you have been a vampire for over twenty years, I think its time for you to get over it okay?  You made me!  At first I wasn't happy about it - I rebelled, you saw what I ended up doing. I got over it eventually and dealt with it, now I couldn’t imagine living as a mundane, simple human."

Tracy sighed, tangling her fingers in her hair once again. "I know but..."

''But nothing. We're immortal.  We do not die but we do eat.  Unfortunately for you, the food we eat is what we used to be. Humans!" Justina interrupted. "Now come on lets go."

Tracy didn’t respond but obediently trailed after her friend as she headed towards the lights in the distance; the sound of music drifting towards them.
