let's leave everything behind and run
The train arrives late, a few minutes more than they expect and Minho nudges Kibum awake. Kibum stirs and Minho stares straight at him. “It’s time to go” Kibum sits up and Minho pulls him off the platform bench by the wrist. Kibum follows him through electronic doors and the air rushes past them and they’re leaving everything behind to run away. He smiles at Minho.
“This is what I want, isn’t it?” Minho squeezes Kibum’s fingers and nods once.
“I want it to be”
“Kibum” Minho watches his lips move as he says his name, he gives a short smile and decides to accompany the boy back home. “The alleys aren’t a good shortcut back home” Minho says, looking over his shoulder. Kibum looks up at him, purses his lips and only gives a short smile. Minho takes one of the bags in his hands, “I’ll help”. Kibum gives another smile, Minho takes it that he doesn’t speak much.
The two of them walk down the busy streets, and all Minho can think about his to not drop the bag of dry food, walk properly and Kibum. They take a turn to the right, Kibum almost bumps into a little girl but avoids it somehow by bumping into Minho who flinches at the sudden contact. “I’m sorry” Kibum lets his head drop. Minho chuckles, “It’s alright”. They walk a little more, the sky slowing turning into a shade of orange and blue, the sun slowly swallowing itself in the clouds and Kibum takes the bag from Minho. “I’ll be fine from here”
“I could walk you home”
Kibum’s eyes crinkles, his lips curve into a sad smile, “I live on the other side of the fence”
Minho wonders what Kibum is doing on the other side of the fence, probably sleeping because the way the clouds float are so soothing and someone hits him on the head. “What are you doing, Minho? You just let a ball fly past you!” Jonghyun shouts, his face red from the obvious anger. “Sorry” He replies curtly and decides to push Kibum to the back of his mind as he continues playing football.
Jonghyun starts whining at his face, Minho wipes the sweat trickling down his face with a sigh.
“Hyung, shut up”
Jonghyun zips his mouth immediately and looks at Minho with a frown on his face. He sits down by Minho, towel hanging over his neck, sweat trickling down almost everywhere. “Hyung” Minho says, looking up at the sky, a hand over his eyes and his beautiful eyes squinting due to the sunlight. Jonghyun turns. “What is there, on the other side of the fence?” Minho asks, squeezing his empty bottle of water lightly.
“I don’t know” is Jonghyun’s truthful answer.
When your fingertips touch something hot, you pull back because that’s what your mind tells you to do. When Minho sees Kibum walk out of a convenience store, his tired legs start jogging towards the beautiful figure, because that’s what his mind, and his heart, tells him to do. He pulls Kibum by the shoulder, panting heavy breaths. Kibum falls on the ground, the bags of snack scattering all over the floor.
“Minho” Kibum whispers into the cold breeze, Minho’s heart jumps at it.
He smiles at the boy as he picks up the snacks and pulls Kibum up. “I’ll walk you home” Minho says, he takes a breath before adding,, “I’ll walk you to the fence”. Kibum smiles curtly and nods, they walk home in silence, enjoying the presence of the other and listening to the soothing breaths of each other. “Do you come over the fence often?” Minho decides to ask.
Kibum shakes his head, “Only when I’m given permission”
“Why are you on the other side of the fence?” Minho continues asking.
Kibum stops in his tracks, he looks at Minho with the moonlight reflecting off his beautiful eyes, “Because we’re the weak and useless, the nobodies”. Minho doesn’t accompany Kibum to the fence in the end, he stands at where he is, the wind blowing through the strands of his hair as he watches Kibum’s retreating back, his helpless retreating back.
Minho feels like an idiot waiting for Kibum at the fence, he shoves his cold trembling hands into his pocket and lets out a deep sigh, a puff of smoke visible at his mouth due to the coldness. “You should go home” Minho brightens up immediately and the sight of Kibum at the entrance of the fence. “I just wanted to see you” is his truthful answer. Kibum chuckles and walks up to him, he takes Minho’s cold hands and places it in between his own.
“It must’ve been freezing out here”
Minho smiles and whispers in a soft, hushed voice, “It was, but it was worth the wait”
“I have to go soon” Kibum says, his voice as soft as Minho’s. Minho’s eyebrows furrow, his eyes on Kibum’s hands around his own, “What do you do over there?”. Kibum looks up and drops his hands. He wraps his long arms around Minho’s slim waist and buries his face into his tone chest, “You don’t have to know”.
And Minho decides to not purse the topic any further.
Kibum’s back isn’t as flawless and beautiful as Minho thought. It’s filled with scars, burns and bruises. Minho cries for Kibum, only because Kibum can no longer cry. “Let’s run. Let’s leave everything behind” Minho says through the fence. Kibum grips onto the fence, he says nothing for the first few minutes. “You have your football” Kibum says, looking at him with those remorseful eyes that Minho wishes that they could be filled with happiness, comfort and most of all, love.
“I have you” Minho whispers as he leans on the fence.
“I can’t escape from here. They’re always watching the entrance” Kibum shakes his head.
Minho smiles and takes a step back, he opens his arms, “I’ll catch you”. Kibum climbs over the fence with much difficulty, almost giving up because he’s the weak and useless that can’t climb over a simple fence. It’s because he’s weak and useless, he lives on the other side of the fence.
“I’ll catch you if you fall, no matter what happens”
Minho wants to see Kibum smile genuinely and he swears to protect him, even though he’s weak and useless. They’re going to leave everything behind for Kibum. Because this is what Kibum wants. They know it’s not right, but they do it anyway, because this is what Kibum wants and this is what Minho wishes for.
