→ taemin x jinri; pg-13; 1474 words
i’ve imagined this to be in the japan!edo era where long swords, katanas and spears are still used, before modern machines are invented. it’s the era where people (this is still a myth however) still believe in magic, demons and etc etc. :) i’ve been watching this anime, got hooked to it and decide to let my imaginations run a little bit. i won’t be giving spots (with an exception of
obsessedheart because she’s my wife) anymore unless you’re actually in my t-list and/or lj-friends. don’t silent read and comment please, they’re really valuable words to me even if they’re just a heart. ♥
please wait for me (it hurts too much)
Jinri is never exactly fond of sake, it burns her throat when she gulps it down and the sharp sting it brings to her nostrils when she breathes isn’t exactly pleasant as well, but Jinri endures it all like a little robot as she serves the sake with a smile on her face, her eyes crinkling along and a melodic sound flowing out of her throat like a little lullaby into a small laugh.
Soojung gives her a little nudge from the side and whispers softly, “Jinri, your lipstick smudged”. Jinri looks at her with little surprise and excuses herself from the crowd of men. She picks up the hem of her white kimono and slides the shoji screens* close with a gentle thud.
“Jinri?” She turns around at the call of her name and smiles at the sight of the stunningly beautiful head geisha*, Victoria. “Soojung said my lipstick smudged” Jinri says as she stands up from her kneeling position, a numb feeling lingering in her legs after sitting on her knees for over an hour. Victoria smiles at her, waves her hand in no particular direction and Jinri follows her almost immediately.
Victoria fixes her lipstick and gives her a new set of kimono to wear because you reek of sake, Jinri, and it stinks so bad that it’s a turn-off, Victoria reasons. Jinri can only sigh as she changes out of the multiple layers of the kimono and changes back into a new set of kimono with the geisha decorating her hair with beautiful hair ornaments.
Jinri is a maiko, an apprentice Geisha, and she thinks that men as dazzling as Taemin should only be served by a full geisha like Victoria, but Taemin objects. He wants her, and that itself makes the blood rise up to her face. It is Taemin’s fourth visit to the geisha house and it is the fourth time he’s asked for Jinri, she can’t help but feel flustered. “Jinri, sake” He says swiftly, holding up an empty ochoko*, his face slightly flushed from the alcohol consuming.
Jinri takes the sake flask skillfully with both hands and pours it delicately onto the cup.
Taemin gives her a smile, and gulps it down without saying anything. Jinri takes it that Taemin doesn’t speak much. She refills his drink a few more times and it surprises her that he doesn’t get drunk easily. Jinri also notices that Taemin never takes off his long katana* held firmly between the sashes of his clothes, but she doesn’t ask about it either, because it may be a sensitive topic and also because Jinri shouldn’t be curious about it.
Taemin leaves the geisha house after the fifteenth cup of sake with a smile, and somehow, Jinri wonders why he even came to the geisha house when he can actually buy the beverage itself and drink alone at home. She lets out a long relieved sigh and decides to wrap up for the day. “I want to sleep” she tells Victoria, and being the doting person she is, the younger girl is dismissed.
Jinri wishes that she isn’t hearing the soft footsteps behind her. She speeds up, holding up a bit of her kimono and she desperately wishes that the soft footsteps behind her is nothing but mere hallucination to fatigue. It doesn’t help when her ears hear a hey you, she almost feels her eyes watering in fear. Jinri almost collapses when she feels a hand on her shoulder, and it happens so fast.
She hears sounds, shoes sliding through the floor or soft mutterings or loud shrieks or the click of a katana back into it’s case. She can’t seem to decide, everything is happening fast and Jinri doesn’t know what’s going on, her knees unbuckle in a jolt of fear. She doesn’t know what to do either, when she feels someone’s arm around her waist, hooking her from contact of the ground.
“Hey, you alright?” Jinri blinks once. Twice. Thrice, and it hits her that it’s Taemin, not some stranger following her.
“Y-Yes” She manages to get out, and it’s obvious that she isn’t. Taemin smiles slightly and helps Jinri to balance herself again. Much to her disappointment, Taemin unhooks his arm from Jinri’s waist. But disappointment washes away as fast as it comes when Taemin says with a tone so serious that Jinri finds it absolutely stunning, “I’ll walk you home. It’s dangerous at night”
Jinri bows slightly as a sign of appreciation and takes the opportunity to take a long look at his katana. It doesn’t escape Taemin’s sharp senses and answers Jinri’s curiosity, “I’m the captain of the first unit”. She looks at him, her eyes noticing the long scar on his neck and then realizes what Taemin meant. The captain of the first unit. Captain of the first unit. Jinri isn’t stupid to not know that Taemin’s a soldier.
The walk home is silent with the croaks of the crickets in the air. “I’ll walk you home” Taemin insists when Jinri says that she’s fine because her house is only another yard away. Taemin doesn’t leave when Jinri opens the door to her little residence. “Um.. Master Lee?” Jinri asks, using the honorifics she uses in the geisha house. Taemin reaches out to her face, brushes the strand of hair stuck to her cheek, “Good night”
Jinri smiles and she knows she’ll have a good night as she watches Taemin’s retreating back.
There is a sudden earthquake, Jinri doesn’t stumble over nothing, she falls over the table and she shuts her eyes close almost immediately, ready for the painful impact but it doesn’t come. No matter how long Jinri waits, the painful impact doesn’t come. “Hey, get off me” Someone below her mutters. She snaps her eyes open in shock and realizes that Taemin’s below her, she stumbles off him almost immediately, breaking a few cups and plates along the way.
“Master Lee! What are you doing here!?” Jinri shrieks and before Taemin is able to reply, there is another earthquake. Taemin pulls her over and covers her head, he shouts through the loud noises of the screaming village. It’s almost inaudible but Jinri catches it because she watched Taemin’s lips. We’re under attack. Taemin brings Jinri out the village safely and he insists that she takes refuge at where he stays.
It doesn’t calm Jinri down very much, because taking refuge at Taemin’s place meant the headquarters. The headquarters of Taemin’s platoon. He insists and refuses to let go of her frail wrists, Jinri can only let herself be tugged along by Taemin’s strong figure. "Are you alright?" Taemin would ask several times with concern washing over his face, Jinri can only say yes even though she's almost sure that her shin is bleeding from a cut.
The earthquake stops in an hour or so, Jinri doesn't really know either. Taemin refuses to let go of her wrist and she feels somewhat thankful. When Taemin finally tells her that it’s safe and there shouldn’t be any more earthquakes, Jinri’s knees finally give way and a comfortable darkness envelopes her with Taemin’s voice calling out for her.
When Jinri wakes up, she learns that a doctor named Kibum nursed her back to health and that she’d been unconscious for two whole days. “Don’t worry, you were unconscious to fear” Kibum says with a small smile on his face as he closes the box of medications. Taemin visits her later in the evening with tired eyes, Jinri only smiles and tells him to rest because you don’t look as stunning as before. He falls asleep on her lap, Jinri strokes his soft golden caramel hair.
The soft night breeze blows, Kibum decides to not interrupt them as he backs away with dinner in his hands. Jinri also learns that Taemin will be out to war, he embraces her tightly and please wait for me, he silently begs.
Master Lee, it’s Jinri. How are you doing? The weather’s great, the cherry blossoms are blooming and Victoria-unnie just got married. I hope you rest lots and stay safe. I’m doing great here.
(she silently weeps and the salty tears lulls her to sleep)
It’s Jinri. I’m a year older now, i’m a big big girl now living in a big big world. I hope you’re doing good and please be careful.
(jinri’s world slowly gets smaller every day)
Jinri no longer knows what to mail Taemin.
Please come back.
[*] shoji screens are the japanese style doors
[*] the reason i used sake instead of soju (a distilled beverage native to Korea, also comparable to vodka) is because i wanted to portray a japanese-like feeling to the entire one-shot and sakes are greatly used in the edo era where samurais, warriors and soldiers drink.
[*] according to wikipedia, geishas does not necessarily mean prostitution. in fact, geisha actually mean ‘performing artist’, thus jinri’s role in this. apprentice geishas are called maiko, meaning they are paid half of what the full geishas earn, and/or what we usually see/imagine/read, the ones who pour alcohol for men.
[*] ochoko is a cup, cylindrically shaped and used for sake.
[*] katana is a japanese style sword, it’s very long.
