I had him somewhere safe. I wanted him to wallow in pain and make sure that was all he remembered when I killed him. I go back to kill him and he's bloody well gone, hasn't he?

I thought he would have bled to death within hours. I made a mistake. There you go, I, Lucius Malfoy, screwed it up. I will take the punishment I deserve. However, there's no real harm done, as I had blanked his memory. For that matter, he could have already died and someone could have just moved his body, for all I know.

He couldn't have escaped on his own, I know that much.
