I'd just like to say, as someone who works in a public library that

a) I would never lend anything sharp to any member of the public, hell, I even think lending them pens is dangerous (I am only sort-of joking there

People sometimes get snotty with us because we won't lend scalpels or knives to students! It's more for their own safety than ours though..

Yeah, there is probably an element of that in our policy too. After all imagine the headline "Woman Severs Fingers with Library Scissors!"

To be fair, if the member of staff really made the comments reported here (and note that I say "if") then it didn't really help the situation.
