It's okay, I guess. Currently I have 3 applications out that I have not yet heard anything one way or the other. One in particular is at an academic lab at UChicago, I'd really like to know if they've filled the position or not, so will be contacting directly to ask even though it's unorthodox. (The HR site does not give their contact info, but I googled which lab it is with some confidence).

There's more openings coming down the line, of course. But if I don't have employment by mid-Feb, somewhere like B&N or Petsmart is gonna start looking pretty good as an interim job.

I have a friend applying to UChicago for her Phd. It's a great school and Chicago is one of my totally favorite cities. Good luck!
