Made with real vegans

May 29, 2008 20:36

I made ice cream for a going away party recently and in order to be all inclusive I made one that was vegan - i.e. no milk, eggs or cream for those who are either vegetarian or lactose intolerant.

After trying out a couple of recipes this was the winner.

I was going to say that this sounds awful, but then I realized that I have maple bacon ice cream in my refrigerator right now, so I'm not exactly in a position to cast the first stone.

It is actually pretty good. The flavor is actually pretty good. You can definitely taste a hint of almond with the almond milk and the french vanilla creamer makes it so that you almost don't need the vanilla extract. I have a batch in the fridge that used regular creamer so we'll see how that one tastes.

It's just not as creamy as ice cream made with either a custard or just heavy cream, but for a vegan or lactose intolerant person who can't eat regular ice cream, it's not a bad substitute.

Yeah, it actually tasted completely normal, not weird at all. If someone didn't know it was "vegan," they probably wouldn't have thought anything was odd about it at all.

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed. Maybe I'll give it a go.
