Character

Name: Seles Wilder
Fandom: Tales of Symphonia
Gender: Female
Age: 15
Time Period: Post Zelos retrieving his Cruxis Crystal; pre being defeated in the Coliseum.
Wing Color: Coral Pink
History: Here

Personality: The first thing that comes to the mind of Seles’ visitors, after they have met her, is how polite she is. Despite having never spent a day in Meltokio’s court or set foot on the social scene, Seles has an impeccable set of manners and is well versed in all the social graces... despite, what most socialites would say, her bad breeding. However, this polite face is just a mask that Seles wears to hide her much uglier true feelings. Underneath it, she is a bitter, lonely girl who feels forgotten by the world at large and her only family. She resents her situation and being punished for a crime that her mother committed when she was only four years old.

Seles is a very stubborn, determined, and focused young woman. When she decides to do something, she throws all of her energy into it. Seles is a perfectionist who never settles for anything but the best from herself. She’s prone to disregarding her health in favor of pursuing her goals. Seles is also very tenacious: it takes a great deal to convince her to give something up. For example, during the Coliseum sidequest, Seles can be seen several times before you even fight her. Once encountered in the Arena, Seles will appear again and again until she is defeated - because to her, she hasn’t achieved her goal of proving herself to her half-brother, Zelos.

Because she has had very few lasting relationships in life, Seles has learned to purposefully shut people out. It’s difficult to get through her nigh-impenetrable wall of manners that she has purposefully erected to keep people away from her. To Seles, there’s no point in being close with people: they’ll only leave her behind, in the end. Not only does she have a hard time caring for and trusting other people, but she has an even harder time admitting that care and trust. However, those she does care for and trust she is extremely loyal to. Seles loves fiercely, as much as she would try to hide it.

Strengths:

Physical: Both Zelos and Regal have referenced Seles as being a good fencer. In the Arena, she was capable of performing a modified Light Spear Cannon, which is high-level technique. With her exsphere, Seles is a wicked fight.
Mental: Seles is a quick study and an altogether bright girl. She’s capable of finding and following a person based only on a name: when Zelos once told her that Sheena was his “hunny,” Seles tracked her down on her own and promptly proceeded to stalk her. She’s capable of performing high-level ice and light magics; it’s not shown how she learned them, but she may have learned them through her own self-study. Considering Seles’ stubborn personality, it’s certain a viable theory.
Emotional: Seles is stalwart. She never gives up; once she’s made up her mind, she has made it up. While this can sometimes work against her, usually it works in her favor.

Weaknesses:

Physical: Seles is a small, frail girl. She’s prone to sickness, has problems in her upper respiratory system, and is prone to headaches, dizzy spells, and fainting when she overexerts herself. In an actual fight, without her exsphere, Seles would be very easily defeated.
Mental: Despite being smart, Seles tends to lack a certain level of common sense. Because she can be so focused, she can miss things that are right in front of her. For instance: she is so fixated on how little attention Zelos pays her, that she misses how much he cares about her. This also leads her to ignore her health; during the Coliseum sequence, many of her appearances were marked by her coughing. Yet, she continued to appear, and even fight against any member of Lloyd’s group who went through the Advanced level of competition.
Emotional: Seles is prickly and distant, has an awful temper, and tends to hold grudges for long periods of time. She tends to be obsessive: Seles is jealous of Zelos’ many, many girlfriends, and hates the idea of him spending time with the “floozies.” She has abandonment and intimacy issues. Zelos goes to visit her to retrieve his Cruxis Crystal, she speaks very coldly to him - yet, as soon as he is out of earshot, she softly calls out to him to take care.

First Person: Q&A, please!

1. What is your greatest fear? I’m afraid that my brother hates

I don’t like spiders. They’re absolutely vile.

2. What in life do you value the most? ... family. Even if they’re gone - even if they hate you - it’s still important who is tied to you by blood.

3. How do you think you perform in a crisis? I shuffle very nicely to whatever back room they want to hide me in. ... I’m not very useful in a crisis.

4. What is more important: love or loyalty? Honestly, I don’t think I can choose. Love and loyalty go hand in hand; you cannot have one without the other.

5. Describe the happiest and saddest moments of your life. When I was ... very young, I tried to meet my father, and my brother. I didn’t know that he was dead; it was quite foolish of me. But... I did get to meet my brother. He found me, wandering in the gardens of the Wilder manor. When I collapsed, he was the first person I saw. I remember being... very happy, to meet my brother.

Not long after that, I was separated from my mother and sent to the Abbey. I was told that my father had committed suicide and that my mother had attempted to kill the Chosen One, for my sake. And that ... because of that, I was to be sent away. They told me that it had already been decided, and that nothing could change it. I was so ... angry, and afraid and - sad. I didn’t understand anything.

Third Person:

To be frank, Seles was used to waking up in strange places. How many times had she blacked out, only to wake with a pounding headache, locked in her bedroom, sheets and blankets pulled up to her chin? This, however - this was different. This time, she woke to trees and golden sunlight drifting through the canopy; birdsong and the sound of running water. Seles woke to the outdoors: the real outdoors, not just the courtyard of the Abbey, or the gardens of Meltokio. As she slowly - slowly, pushed herself up from the ground, all Seles could do was stare at it, and think that she had never imagined that a forest would be so... so...

... grubby. Waking up in the middle of a forest, Seles found, was a terribly undignified experience. The air was hot, there was no breeze to speak of, and she was sweating. Her back ached as if the muscles had been stretched and pulled, fiercer then it ever had after her fencing lessons. She gingerly wiped her hands on the front of the hideous white smock she had been changed into, frowning at the trails of dirt they left behind. The change of clothing did not please her: going outside without a hat was not just unfashionable but impractical, with how easily she burned.

“This is not anything like how the books make it out to be,” Seles remarked, futilely swatting at a fly that buzzed past her ear. “They make it out to be breathtaking. Wonderful. Positively magical.” So far, it had been none of those things. Startling, uncomfortable, and altogether disconcerting, yes, but she had yet to be convinced of the wonder of it all. She gingerly rose to her feet, taking care not to move too quickly. Moving too quickly was usually a bad decision after waking from a period of unconsciousness, as it tended to make her dizzy.

Once standing, Seles took a closer look around her. It was then that she realized that there was not a single thing within sight she could recognize, even from what she had read about Tethe’alla’s landscape in books. No landmarks; no distinctive flora; and no sign of people. Neither were there any signs as to how she had been brought here. There was dirt, trees, and bushes. There was the sound of running water - a river, perhaps?

The thought occurred to Seles that, perhaps, it was going to be difficult to find her way out of the less-than-magical forest and back into proper civilization.
